Bittorrent as an RBE

I continue to think a lot about The Zeitgeist Movement and the idea of a resource based economy. This morning I am downloading the latest Kubuntu distribution and it made me realize that bittorrent is another RBE example.

First, of course, is the fact that Kubuntu is a resource. Like all non-prorietary software, it is not scarce as anyone can get it for free. The limiting factor is distribution. It is a full CD (700MB) of software. The issue is, of course, delivery.

Zeitgeist Addendum

There are two movies here, one called Zeitgeist and the other Zeitgeist Addendum. They are available for free on the Internet or you can buy them on DVDs for $5. The advantage of the DVD is that it has subtitles in a bunch of languages. Apparently, the DVD also has the movie dubbed in Spanish.

If you feel something is wrong with the world/the way the world is going, I highly recommend watching at least Zeitgeist Addendum. Is it political? No, it is actually anti-political.

Free Pressure Tank

I live off-grid. While I have an inverter to supply 120VAC, I have tried to run as many things either directly off the batteries (24 volts) or off one of the three 24 to 12 volt DC-DC converters. One such choice was a 12 volt RV-style water pump for water pressure in the house. When I initially hooked it up, it tended to cycle a lot when using water. While it wasn't a serious problem when washing your hands or doing dishes, the pressure variations in the shower were a bit irritating. The solution was to add a pressure tank.

Don't Blame the Internet

All so often I hear people say "oh, it doesn't work like that anymore because of the Internet." The implication always seems to be that everything worked one way for a long time (there never is a measure but you get the feeling it is supposed to be since the beginning of man) and then the Internet "broke it". Well, the Internet is just the current step in evolution.
