Communications

This is a quick thought today. It will likely become a book on this site. The quasi-civil war in Honduras makes me think about this a lot. The government has been closing down radio and TV stations and, in some cases, interrupting Internet communications. What I want to write about is how to have a repression-free communications method. Many years ago there was a little book written called Radio is my Bomb. I had a copy. Searching today lead me to http://www.roguecom.com/rogueradio/radioismybomb.html but it was not the book I had. But, no matter. The technical side (including lots of schematics) is way out of date anyway. The point is that communications is the tool to take control (of a situation, a country, ...) for the non-violent. It certainly played a part in the resistance in Honduras. With some good planning, it could be even more effective. In the book I expect to write someday, I want to cover:
  • Mass communications. That is, the best methods to get out your message to the general populace.
  • Digital backbone. The communications channels/methods used to feed the mass outlets using digital techniques.
  • Feeds in and out of your country.
  • Studio/production equipment.
  • Powering your equipment
Maybe more but the basic idea is to give you enough information to set up a relatively repression-proof communications system that includes internal information sharing and mass delivery. The added piece is that this needs to be easy to transport, set up and, in some cases, build.
